GUWAHATI – On New Year’s Day 2026, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the Babu Asoni scheme, a landmark monthly financial assistance program specifically for male students pursuing higher education. The initiative, also referred to as the "Babu Scheme," is designed to serve as a male-centric counterpart to the successful Nijut Moina scheme for girl students.

Postgraduate (PG) Students: ₹2,000 per month.
Graduate (UG) Students: ₹1,000 per month.
These payouts are intended to support students in managing ancillary costs such as books, stationery, travel, and internet data for up to ten months of the academic year.

requirements:
Residency: Applicants must be permanent residents of Assam.
Income Limit: The annual family income must be less than ₹4 lakh.
Educational Status: Students must be enrolled in undergraduate or postgraduate courses within a recognized institution in Assam.
Exclusions: Children of government employees are not eligible for this scheme

Chief Minister Sarma noted that the scheme was introduced following a "silent movement" by male students who requested support similar to that provided to their female peers. By easing the financial burden on low-income families, the initiative aims to reduce dropout rates among young men and encourage them to complete their degrees without the pressure of premature entry into the workforce.
